Sun Prints
Landscapes and solarplate impressions
This ongoing series of photogravure prints explores Southern California’s botanical presence—landscapes in flux, intimate plant portraits, and the quiet forms of a region shaped by sun and drought.
Each image begins as a photograph, then becomes a solarplate—a light-sensitive steel-backed polymer plate exposed to the sun, washed in water, and inked by hand. The sun itself plays an active role in the process: its intensity, angle, and duration shape the unique characteristics of each plate. No two are exactly alike.
Printed on fine Hahnemühle Copperplate paper, the final works are both delicate and grounded—slow, tactile impressions of plants that rely on the same sun to grow. This is printmaking as a kind of ecological reflection: precise, atmospheric, and shaped by the same forces that shape the land.
